About The Ancient City (Muang Boran)

One of Bangkok's genuinely underrated attractions. It's a huge open-air park, one of the largest in the world, filled with detailed replicas and re-creations of Thailand's monuments, and the whole thing is cleverly laid out in the shape of the country. It's part theme park, part serene garden, and it works.

The scale is the catch and the charm. It's enormous, so rent a bicycle or drive one of the little carts to get around, otherwise you'll wear yourself out. Come on a weekday and you can have huge stretches of it almost to yourself.

If the thought of elbowing through crowds at the real temples puts you off, this is a peaceful alternative that still gives you a sweep of Thai heritage in one place.

Highlights

  • Detailed replicas of Thailand's monuments in one park
  • The whole layout shaped like the country
  • Cycling or driving a cart through near-empty grounds on weekdays
  • A calm alternative to crowded real temples

Tips

  • Rent a bicycle or cart, the park is enormous
  • Come on a weekday when it's nearly empty
  • Late afternoon is cooler for getting around
  • Give it a half to full day to do it justice

How to get there

BTS Sukhumvit line to Kheha (end of line), then a short songthaew/taxi; ~1-1.5 hr total from central Bangkok.
