This is the one place in Bangkok you genuinely cannot skip, and everyone knows it, which is exactly the problem. It's the country's most sacred royal-temple complex and the home of the revered Emerald Buddha, and the sheer glittering density of gold, mosaic and spires is unlike anything else in the city. It earns its reputation.
It's also the single busiest tourist site in Bangkok, so temper your expectations about a peaceful, contemplative visit. Come at opening and you'll get an hour of relative calm before the tour buses roll in and the heat builds. Come at midday and you'll be shuffling shoulder to shoulder in full sun.
One honest warning: the touts outside are relentless and dishonest. If anyone by the gate tells you it's 'closed today' and offers a tuk-tuk tour of gem shops instead, walk straight past. That's a classic scam and the palace is open.
