About Shell Cemetery (Susan Hoi / Fossil Shell Beach)
On paper this is remarkable: one of only a handful of places on Earth where ancient freshwater shells have fossilized into slab-like shelves along the shore. Geology nerds will get a kick out of it.
But let's be straight, most visitors find it underwhelming and a bit overrated. It is a quick photo of some rock shelves, not a destination worth going out of your way for.
If you do go, time it for low tide when the fossil slabs are actually exposed, and keep it short. It slots in best alongside other stops rather than as a trip of its own.
Highlights
- Rare fossilized freshwater shell slabs
- Geologically unusual shoreline
- Quick, low-commitment stop
- Best viewed at low tide
Tips
- Go at low tide, otherwise the slabs are covered

- Pair it with other sights rather than a dedicated trip
- You will need a taxi or scooter to reach it
