Phuket to Koh Phi Phi is one of the busiest boat crossings in Thailand, and the choice is simpler than the number of booking sites suggests: a big ferry for about ฿600 and two hours, or a speedboat for about ฿850 and one hour. Everything leaves from the same place, and the only rule that catches people out is the check-in cutoff.

Where you leave from: Rassada Pier
Every scheduled boat to Phi Phi departs Rassada Pier, on Phuket’s east coast just outside Phuket Town. Rough transfer times: 15 minutes from Phuket Town, and 45 to 60 minutes from Patong, Kata, or Karon depending on traffic, which on this island is not a small variable.
This matters more than it sounds. If you’re staying on the west-coast beaches, the drive to the pier can take longer than the crossing itself, and you still need to be checked in 30-45 minutes before departure. For an 08:30 ferry from Patong, that means leaving your hotel around 06:45.
Ferry: the default choice
Standard ferry fares are ฿600 one-way and ฿1,200 return. The 08:30 and 13:30 departures carry early-bird pricing at ฿450 one-way and ฿900 return — the cheapest scheduled way across, and worth planning your morning around.
Confirmed departures from Rassada Pier: 08:30, 11:00, 13:30, 13:45, and 15:00. Crossing time is around 2 hours. In low season the schedule thins, so check the day before rather than turning up for a sailing that isn’t running.
The ferry is the right default for most travelers. It’s cheaper, it has deck space and a roof, and it handles chop far better than a speedboat does. Two hours with a view of the limestone islands is not a hardship.
Speedboat: an hour saved, a rougher hour
Speedboats run the crossing in about 1 hour for ฿850 one-way and ฿1,700 return, with early-bird fares from ฿800 one-way and ฿1,600 return on selected departures.
The trade-off is real: speedboats slam rather than glide, you’ll take spray, and there’s no wandering around. On a calm morning it’s a fast, fun ride. On a rough afternoon it’s an hour of being thrown around, and speedboats are the first services cancelled when conditions turn. Take one when the extra hour genuinely buys you something — a same-day return, or a connection you can’t miss.
The return leg from Phi Phi
Coming back is easier to schedule than going out. Boats leave Phi Phi’s Tonsai Pier roughly hourly, with departures around 08:30, 09:30, 11:00, 12:00, 13:00, 13:30, 14:30, 15:00 and 16:00. That density is what makes a day trip workable: go over on the 08:30, come back mid-afternoon.
Check-in: the rule that catches people
Be at the terminal 30 to 45 minutes before departure, and know that the boarding gate closes 15 minutes before the scheduled time. This is enforced, not advisory. Between the check-in window and the drive from the west coast, treat a Phi Phi crossing as a two-and-a-half-hour commitment on the Phuket end, not a one-hour boat ride.
Which should you pick?
Take the 08:30 ferry. It’s the cheapest fare on the route at ฿450 one-way, it gets you to Phi Phi with the day still ahead of you, and the morning sea is usually calmer than the afternoon.
Take a speedboat only if you’re doing Phi Phi in a single day, or if a later start means the ferry schedule no longer works.
