About Wat Maheyong

A spacious 15th-century ruin east of the island, well off the main tourist circuit and all the more peaceful for it. The standout feature is the central chedi buttressed by rows of carved elephant figures, and there is an adjoining forest meditation centre that gives the whole place a hushed, reflective feel.

This is one to come to for calm rather than spectacle. Mornings are quietest, when the meditation grounds are at their most serene and you may have the ruins largely to yourself.

Since it sits out east near the Ayothaya Floating Market, it pairs naturally with a visit there if you want to combine the two on one trip out of town.
