About Wat Mahathat
This is the one you have seen in every Thailand photo feature: the stone Buddha head cradled in the roots of a banyan tree. It is real, it is genuinely striking in person, and it is not a tourist trap dressed up as a highlight. This was a royal temple founded in the 14th century, and the tree-root head is only part of it. The rest of the grounds hold rows of headless Buddhas and toppled brick prangs that tell the story of the city's fall.
Come early. By mid-morning a queue forms just to get a clear shot of that head, and the sun is unforgiving once it climbs. If photos matter to you, this is worth building your day around rather than squeezing in at noon.
One rule people trip over: when you photograph the tree-root head, you crouch or sit so your own head is never higher than the Buddha's. It is not optional politeness, it is expected, and staff will remind you.
