About Wat Lokayasutharam
The temple around it is mostly gone, but the reason to come is very much still here: an enormous outdoor reclining Buddha draped in a saffron robe, one of the largest in Ayutthaya. It is free, it is quick, and it is a genuine highlight that plenty of tour buses drive right past.
Because it sits out in the open, the light matters. Early morning or late afternoon gives you soft light on the figure and none of the harsh midday glare. There is not much shade, so those windows are also the comfortable ones.
On the western side of the island, it pairs well with a bike loop out this way. Fifteen or twenty minutes and you have seen it, but it stays with you.
