About Wat Chang Lom (Si Satchanalai)
This is the standout at Si Satchanalai and a genuine highlight, not a filler stop. A Sri Lankan-style bell-shaped stupa rises from a square base ringed with big elephant sculptures, and it is one of the finest elephant-encircled chedis anywhere in Thailand. It is larger-scaled and better preserved than the elephant temples you will see elsewhere.
It sits near the centre of the old walled town, a short cycle from the park entrance, so it is easy to fold into your loop of the ruins.
Come in the morning when the light rakes across the elephants and picks out the detail. Cool season makes the cycling between temples a lot more pleasant.
