About Tha Phae Gate

Tha Phae Gate is the restored eastern gate of the old city wall and probably the most recognisable landmark in Chiang Mai. Honestly, it's mainly a photo stop and a meeting point rather than a sight you need to spend much time at.

That said, it's worth a look, especially in the late afternoon or evening when the square fills up with pigeons, buskers, and sometimes an event stage. It has a bit of atmosphere at the right time of day.

It's dead central and every songthaew route passes nearby, so it's easy to fold into a walk around the Old City rather than a dedicated trip.

Highlights

  • The restored eastern gate of the old city wall
  • A lively public square with pigeons and buskers
  • Occasional event stage or gathering happening in the square
  • A central, easy meeting point for the Old City

Tips

  • Go late afternoon or evening for the most atmosphere, buskers and crowds pick up then
  • It's open all the time as a public square, so there's no schedule to plan around
  • It's walkable from almost anywhere in the Old City and every songthaew route passes by
  • Don't plan more than 15 to 30 minutes here, it's a stop, not a destination

How to get there

Central and walkable; every songthaew route passes nearby
