About Royal Elephant Kraal (Elephant Kraal Village)
The historic site itself is real heritage: a restored royal teak stockade that was once used to corral wild elephants, now tied to an elephant care village north of the island. Viewing the old kraal grounds is a legitimate, low-key thing to do, and mornings are cooler and kinder for the animals.
Here is the honest part, and it matters. Ayutthaya has a number of separate commercial elephant-ride camps near the ruins, and those are widely criticised by welfare groups for chains, bullhooks and riding animals in the heat. Please do not confuse the heritage kraal with those ride operators, and do not give the ride camps your money.
If you want to be around elephants, choose observation and care over riding, and vet whatever operator you use first. The animals' welfare should decide it, not the photo op.
