About Hellfire Pass (Konyu Cutting) & Memorial Museum
Of all the WWII sites around Kanchanaburi, this is the one that hits hardest. The deep cutting was hand-dug through solid rock by POWs working by torchlight, and walking through it with the free audio guide is genuinely affecting. The memorial museum is excellent and the whole thing is run as an Australian memorial, so it's handled with real care.
It's a long way out and worth every minute of the drive. Budget proper time, because the trail down into the cutting and back is a real walk, not a stroll, and it gets hot.
Go early morning so you can walk the cutting before the heat builds, and bring water. This is the emotional centre of a Death Railway trip.
