Almost everyone doing Phuket to Khao Lak is really doing Phuket airport to Khao Lak, because Khao Lak has no airport of its own and HKT is the gateway for this whole stretch of the Andaman coast. The good news: the airport is at the north end of Phuket, so you’re already pointed the right way and never need to see Phuket Town.

Private taxi: the default for most arrivals
A private taxi or pre-booked transfer covers the 80km in about 1 to 1.5 hours for roughly ฿1,200-2,300 (US$36-70) per vehicle. Some operators start around ฿1,200 for one or two passengers, with minibuses for larger groups from about ฿2,000.
The key detail is that this is per vehicle, not per person. For two people it’s comparable to two minivan seats; for a family of four it’s clearly cheaper and far less hassle. After a long-haul flight, arriving at your actual hotel rather than a highway junction is worth something too.
Pre-booking a fixed-price transfer is usually no more expensive than the airport taxi desk and removes the negotiation at the end of a travel day.
Shared minivan: the middle option
Shared minivans run ฿350-600 (US$11-18) per person and take 1.5 to 2.5 hours. The driving time is no different from a taxi — the extra hour is hotel drops.
That matters more here than in most places, because Khao Lak isn’t a town. It’s a roughly 20km string of separate beach areas — Khuk Khak, Bang Niang, Nang Thong, Khao Lak proper — strung along Highway 4. If your hotel is at the far end of the drop order, you’ll sit through everyone else’s arrival first.
Local bus: ฿150 if you don’t mind the walk
The cheapest option by a wide margin is a northbound public bus: route 430 (to Ranong), 436 (to Takua Pa), or 465 (to Surat Thani). All pass through Khao Lak, cost around ฿150, and take 2-2.5 hours.
The trade-off is where you end up. These buses stop on Highway 4, not at hotels, so you’ll need a songthaew or motorbike taxi for the last kilometre or two. With light luggage and some flexibility it’s a perfectly good option, and at a tenth of the taxi fare it’s hard to argue with.
Coming from Patong or Phuket Town
If you’re already staying on Phuket rather than flying in, the trip is longer: you have to drive the length of the island before you even start north. Budget an extra 45 minutes and ฿600-1,000 on a private transfer compared with an airport pickup — typically ฿1,800-2,400 all in.
Tell your driver the actual hotel
Worth repeating because it causes real confusion: “Khao Lak” covers 20km of coast. Bang Niang and Khuk Khak are a long way apart, and a driver told only “Khao Lak” may drop you at the wrong end of the strip. Give the hotel name and the beach.
Which should you pick?
Flying into HKT with luggage or family: pre-booked private transfer. ฿1,200-2,300 per vehicle, straight to your hotel, done in about an hour.
Solo or a couple watching costs: shared minivan at ฿350-600 each.
Travelling light and unhurried: the northbound bus at ฿150.
Once you arrive, outthailand.com’s things to do in Khao Lak and Khao Lak beaches guides cover the strip, and best time to visit Khao Lak matters here — this coast has a real low season. Heading back to Phuket later, see Khao Lak to Phuket. If Khao Lak is one stop on a wider Andaman trip, Khao Sok to Phuket covers the jungle detour inland.
