Koh Samui Airport (USM) is the nicest-looking terminal you will pass through in Thailand and one of the most expensive ways to reach a Thai island. Both facts have the same cause: Bangkok Airways built the airport, owns it, and flies nearly everything into it. This guide covers what the fares actually are, which routes exist right now, what it costs to get from the terminal to your beach, when the cheaper Surat Thani or Nakhon Si Thammarat routes are the smarter call, and what to expect on arrival.
All prices are in Thai baht with US dollars in parentheses at ฿33 = US$1 (July 2026), given as ranges because airfares and transfer prices move with season and demand. If you are still weighing every option for reaching the island, our getting to Koh Samui guide compares flights, ferries and the overnight bus side by side.
What does it cost to reach Koh Samui by air?
Flying direct into USM costs roughly twice what the workaround costs, and saves you two to four hours. Here is how the realistic options compare as of July 2026.
| Route into Koh Samui | Typical one-way cost | Time after landing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bangkok (BKK or DMK) to USM, Bangkok Airways | ฿2,300-6,600 (~US$70-200) | ~20 min to a taxi | Short trips, families, late arrivals |
| Bangkok to Surat Thani (budget carrier) + minivan and ferry | ฿1,550-3,950 (~US$47-120) total | 2-4 hours | Budget travellers with a flexible day |
| Bangkok to Nakhon Si Thammarat + bus and ferry | Flight from ~฿900 (~US$27) plus ~฿600-900 (~US$18-27) transfer | 3-4 hours | Backpackers, or when Surat Thani is sold out |
| Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai or U-Tapao to USM, Bangkok Airways | Varies by route and season, typically above budget-carrier norms | ~20 min to a taxi | Island-hopping without backtracking to Bangkok |
| Singapore to USM, Bangkok Airways or Scoot | Varies by carrier and season | ~20 min to a taxi | Direct international arrival, no Bangkok transit |

Why is Koh Samui Airport so expensive?
Because the airline that owns the runway is also the airline selling you the seat. Samui Airport is privately owned and operated by Bangkok Airways Public Company Limited, per Bangkok Airways’ own boutique-airports listing, and as of July 2026 FlightConnections shows Bangkok Airways operating every nonstop route from USM except Scoot’s Singapore service. No AirAsia, no Nok Air, no Thai Vietjet, which are exactly the carriers that make other Thai domestic routes cost ฿800 to ฿1,500. Thai Airways withdrew from the Bangkok to Samui route in 2018, and nothing has replaced that competitive pressure since.
The island matters enormously to the airline’s business, which is another reason the pricing does not soften. TTR Weekly reported on 30 March 2026 that Samui accounted for 65% of Bangkok Airways’ passenger traffic and 61% of its flights, at an 83% load factor. Speaking about the airline’s plans for the year, president Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth said: “The 2026 target reflects a careful review of route performance and cost structure.” Read that as a business protecting a highly profitable asset, not one about to start a price war with itself.
The honest read: you are not being ripped off by a scam, you are paying the going rate in a market with one supplier. Treat the USM fare as the price of the island’s convenience and book early, because the fare curve on a monopoly route climbs steeply in the last two weeks.
Which airlines and routes fly into Samui Airport?
Two airlines and roughly nine nonstop destinations, as listed by FlightConnections in July 2026.
| Destination | Airline(s) | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) | Bangkok Airways | Domestic, highest frequency |
| Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) | Bangkok Airways | Domestic |
| Phuket (HKT) | Bangkok Airways | Domestic |
| Krabi (KBV) | Bangkok Airways | Domestic |
| Chiang Mai (CNX) | Bangkok Airways | Domestic |
| U-Tapao / Pattaya (UTP) | Bangkok Airways | Domestic |
| Singapore (SIN) | Bangkok Airways, Scoot | International |
| Hong Kong (HKG) | Bangkok Airways | International |
| Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) | Bangkok Airways | International, listed as starting later in 2026 |
Route list per FlightConnections, checked July 2026. Schedules change seasonally, and additional services including a reported Kuala Lumpur Subang link have been announced in trade press but should be verified against a live booking before you plan around them.
Two practical notes. First, plenty of other airlines will sell you a Samui ticket through codeshare or interline agreements, so the code on your booking may not match the aircraft you board. Second, the Phuket and Krabi routes are genuinely useful if you are combining Andaman and Gulf coasts, because they save you a backtrack through Bangkok. Our Thailand domestic flights guide covers how the wider budget-carrier network works and where connections make sense.
What does it cost to get from the airport to the beaches?
Budget roughly ฿150-300 per person (US$5-9) for a shared minivan and roughly ฿500-1,500 (US$15-45) for a fixed-zone airport taxi, depending how far around the ring road you are going. The airport sits on the northeast corner of the island, near Bophut and Chaweng, which is why the north and east beaches are cheap to reach and the southwest is not.
| Destination | Shared minivan (per person) | Airport taxi (per vehicle) | Rough drive time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chaweng, Bophut, Bangrak, Choeng Mon | ฿150-300 (~US$5-9) | from ~฿500 (~US$15) | 10-20 min |
| Maenam | ฿150-300 (~US$5-9) | ~฿800 (~US$24) | 20-25 min |
| Lamai | ฿150-300 (~US$5-9) | ~฿900-1,140 (~US$27-35) | 25-40 min |
| Nathon (ferry pier) | ฿150-300 (~US$5-9) | ~฿1,140 (~US$35) | 35-45 min |
| Taling Ngam, Lipa Noi, Laem Set | ฿200-350 (~US$6-11) | ~฿1,520 (~US$46) | 45-60 min |
Taxi bands reflect posted airport-counter zone pricing reported by transfer operators; independent 2026 guides quote lower negotiated fares of roughly ฿300-700 for the same trips. Ground transport on Samui is not centrally regulated, so confirm the price before you get in. ฿33 = US$1 (July 2026).
Two things to know before you walk out of arrivals. Airport taxis are prepaid at a counter, where you pay the zone fare and hand a ticket to the driver, and ride-hailing apps are not reliably usable at the airport. Thai and international press reported through 2025 and 2026 that Grab drivers are kept off airport property under pressure from local transport groups, leaving arriving passengers to meet drivers outside the perimeter, sometimes a long walk with bags. Ride-hailing is far more usable for the return trip. If your hotel offers a transfer, this is one Thai island where taking it is often the least annoying choice. For getting around once you are settled, our getting around Koh Samui guide covers songthaews, scooter rental and what taxis really cost.
What is the terminal actually like?
USM is an open-air garden airport, not a sealed terminal, and it is the most pleasant arrival in Thailand. Thatched pavilions sit in landscaped tropical gardens, there are no jet bridges, and you walk down the aircraft stairs onto the apron and ride an open-sided shuttle tram to baggage claim. Immigration and bag collection are small-scale and typically faster than Phuket or Suvarnabhumi.
The trade-off is exactly what you would guess: the terminal is naturally ventilated rather than air-conditioned throughout, so a hot afternoon or a monsoon downpour is something you experience rather than watch through glass. Bring a light layer for the flight and accept that you will be warm on the walk. If you are flying out, Bangkok Airways passengers have lounge access before departure, and economy passengers can upgrade to the Blue Ribbon Club Lounge for a fee, quoted at around ฿950 (about US$29) per person in Bangkok Airways’ lounge information as of July 2026. Confirm current terms at check-in, as access rules change.
Expect building work. TTR Weekly reported on 30 March 2026 that the Samui Airport improvement project starts in Q2 2026 and completes by 2030, taking the airport to 11 gates, 40 check-in points and 4,000 sqm of commercial space. Nation Thailand reported in August 2024 that the airport was rated at roughly 16,000 passengers a day, about 6 million a year, and that Bangkok Airways wanted the daily flight cap raised from 50 to 73 movements.
When is the USM premium worth paying?
Pay it when your time or your patience is worth more than about ฿1,500 to ฿3,000 per person. Concretely, fly direct into USM if you are on a trip of a week or less, travelling with young children or heavy luggage, arriving in the evening when the last ferries from Donsak have gone, or connecting from an international flight where an extra four-hour ground leg turns a long day into a brutal one.
Take the Surat Thani or Nakhon Si Thammarat route instead when you have a full travel day to spend, you are on a longer trip where the saving funds several nights of accommodation, you are already inside a budget carrier’s network, or USM fares have spiked because you are booking inside two weeks of a high-season date. On a family of four, choosing the Surat Thani combo over four direct USM tickets can free up ฿6,000 to ฿10,000 (roughly US$180-300), which is real money against the where to stay in Koh Samui budget.
The honest downsides
Fares have no competitive floor. On a monopoly route, last-minute pricing is punishing, so book early or plan on the ferry combo. The airport is small and weather-exposed. Delays cascade quickly when Bangkok weather backs up, and there is limited indoor space to wait it out. Ground transport is unregulated and inconsistently priced, with published fares varying by a factor of three depending on who you ask, so agree the price first, every time. Ride-hailing does not work smoothly on arrival, which is a genuine annoyance if you are used to landing and opening an app. And construction is coming, so through 2030 expect some part of the pretty garden terminal to be behind hoarding.
