About Sanctuary of Truth
If you see one thing in Pattaya, make it this. The Sanctuary of Truth is an enormous wooden temple-castle right on the sea, carved entirely by hand from teak and covered head to toe in Hindu and Buddhist figures. It has been going up since 1981 and it's still not finished, which is part of the charm. You'll see carvers at work and hear the constant tap of chisels while you walk around.
It's genuinely the most distinctive thing in town, and photos don't quite do the scale justice. The catch is the price, which is steep for the area, and the fact that hard hats are required because carving is still ongoing overhead. Neither of those should put you off, just know them going in.
Come for the building itself and the seafront setting. If you're on a tight budget and picking your splurges carefully, this is the one worth paying for.
Highlights
- Entirely hand-carved teak structure, no nails on show
- Dense Hindu-Buddhist woodwork covering every surface
- Dramatic seafront setting
- Active carvers still at work as you walk through
Tips
- Go in the morning for cooler light and thinner crowds, or late afternoon for photos
- You'll be given a hard hat to wear since carving continues overhead
- Entry is pricey for Pattaya, so budget for it as your main splurge
- Grab or taxi is quickest from Central Pattaya; a Naklua baht bus plus a short walk is the cheaper option
How to get there
About 5 km north of Central Pattaya in Naklua. Grab/taxi 10-15 min (~120-200 THB), or a Naklua-bound songthaew (baht bus) then short walk.
